A winger is player position in football. Their traditional role is to stay out wide, generally near the touchline, and attack down the flanks (wing) looking for an opportunity to cross the ball into the penalty and put the defenders under pressure. In recent times, wing backs (right and left backs) have become more involved in winger-type actions. Notable wingers include Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, Arjen Robben and Frank Ribéry to name a few.
