Thiago Alcântara do Nascimento (born 11 April 1991), simply known as Thiago, is a Spanish former footballer who played as a central midfielder.
Born in Italy to Brazilian parents, his father being former footballer and World Cup champion Mazinho who played for Lecce in Serie A at the time of Thiago's birth, his early football career was a journey. Having moved back and forth between Spain and Brazil, he started his footballing career at the age of 5. He joined Barcelona's La Masia academy in 2005, and then making his first professional debut on 17 May 2009, coming on as a substitute in the La Liga match against Mallorca. With Barcelona, he won several major honours, including four league titles, a UEFA Champions League title and a FIFA Club World Cup title. He spent five seasons with Barça, before signing for German club Bayern Munich for €25 million in 2013, and reunited with former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola.
Thiago made his debut for Bayern in the 2013 DFL-Supercup, where his team lost against rivals Borussia Dortmund. He has become an important player for the Bavarians since then, making over 200 appearances in all competitions. In 2014, he tore his knee ligament, making him out injured for a year. He has won 14 trophies with Bayern, including the Bundesliga in each of his first seven seasons.
Thiago has represented Spain at several youth levels, including under-17 and under-21 teams where he helped both teams to win the European Championships. He made his first appearance for the senior team in a friendly against his birth country's team, Italy on 10 August 2011. Thiago was selected for UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
