Sanfrecce Hiroshima is a football club based in Asaminami-ku, Hiroshima. They were founded in 1938 as a corporate club for Mazda (back then known as Toyo Kogyo). They play in the J1 League of the J.League. They are named as a portmanteau of San, which is Japanese for three, and the Italian word frecce, which means arrows, in reference to a folktale that a feudal lord told his three sons in ancient Japan that "a single arrow would be snapped, but three together would not be broken." This, in return, references the cooperation that a team must do to achieve victory. Sanfrecce plays in the Hiroshima Big Arch, or also referred to as Edion Stadium Hiroshima due to sponsorship reasons.
