Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur was a match which took place at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday 23 November 2024.
Team News[]
Manchester City[]
Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic was injured playing for Croatia and will be out for at least three weeks.
Manager Pep Guardiola has indicated that John Stones and Manuel Akanji are back in contention, with fellow defender Nathan Ake also nearing a comeback.
Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish may also be available, having trained this week despite withdrawing from international duty, but this game comes too soon for Ruben Dias.
Tottenham Hotspur[]
Rodridgo Bentancur is set to miss Tottenham's next seven domestic fixtures after being banned by the FA for a racist comment, although Spurs have appealed against the length of the suspension.
Head coach Ange Postecoglou has confirmed Cristian Romero won't be ready for Sunday's match, adding that none of the "main" players sidelined prior to the international break will return against City.
Match facts[]
Head-to-head[]
- Manchester City have only won three of the past 10 Premier League meetings (D2, L5).
- City won 2-0 in north London in May and are vying to claim back-to-back league victories versus Spurs for the first time since 2019.
- Tottenham have scored at least twice in each of their past three top-flight games at the Etihad Stadium. No team has ever scored multiple goals in four consecutive Premier League matches away to City.
- Spurs have won two of their last 15 fixtures away to City in all competitions (D3, L10).
Manchester City[]
- City have lost four consecutive games in all competitions, starting with last month’s 2-1 defeat at Tottenham in the EFL Cup - it is the longest losing run of Pep Guardiola’s managerial career.
- The last time the club endured a longer losing streak was in March and April 2006, when they were beaten in six successive matches, the fifth of which came versus Spurs.
- City risk losing three consecutive league fixtures for the first time under Guardiola. It last happened in February to March 2016 during Manuel Pellegrini’s reign, and included a home defeat against Tottenham.
- They are the only team to have scored in all of their Premier League matches this season.
- Guardiola has lost six Premier League games versus Spurs and conceded 22 goals – more than against any other opponent.
- Bernardo Silva has had 17 shots in the Premier League this season, the highest total by a player yet to score.
Tottenham Hotspur[]
- Spurs have 10 points fewer than at this stage last season despite having both scored and conceded exactly the same number of goals: 23 and 13 respectively.
- Tottenham have won two of their past 11 top-flight away matches (D2, L7), including one of five this season.
- Ange Postecoglou has won 25, drawn seven and lost 17 of his first 49 Premier League matches as a manager. The only Spurs bosses to have claimed more wins in their first 50 such fixtures are Antonio Conte (29) and Andre Villas-Boas (27), though only Ossie Ardiles (23) and Glenn Hoddle (20) had more defeats.
- Dejan Kulusevski has created 30 chances in the Premier League this season, including 25 from open play – both totals are the highest by any player prior to the latest round of fixtures.
- Tottenham have made a league-high 612 off-the-ball runs into the penalty area this season, with Dominic Solanke’s tally of 138 the most by any player.
- James Maddison celebrates his 28th birthday on the day of this game.
Match Report[]
James Maddison scored twice as Tottenham romped to victory over a Manchester City side that has now lost five games in a row for the first time since 2006.
Pedro Porro drove home a third before Brennan Johnson added a last minute fourth on an incredible night that saw the end of City's 52-match unbeaten record at Etihad Stadium, stretching back to just before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
It is City's worst home defeat since a 5-1 loss to Tottenham's north London rivals Arsenal in 2003.
It was also the first time they have lost three successive Premier League games under Pep Guardiola, who signed a two-year contract extension 48 hours earlier.
Guardiola had never previously lost a home game by four goals in his managerial career.
The Tottenham fans lapped it up, cheekily singing "you'll be sacked in the morning" at Guardiola as they celebrated Porro's goal.
It was an amazing transformation for Tottenham, who travelled north without both first-choice central defenders, had five teenagers on the bench and had lost their last game 2-1 at home to Ipswich a fortnight ago.
But Ange Postecoglou's side made light of their problems in a way City could not. It was their heaviest home defeat since a 5-2 reverse to Leicester in September 2020, when Maddison was among the scorers for the Foxes.
The manner of the defeat merely highlighted the absence of injured midfielder Rodri, who was the subject of an elaborate pre-match celebration on his first visit back to the stadium since winning the Ballon d'Or.
City remain in second but Liverpool will stretch their lead at the top to eight points if they win at Southampton on Sunday.
Tottenham move up to sixth, four points behind City.
These are unchartered times in Guardiola's career.
He has never lost so many games in a row. He has lost by margins of three and four goals in two of his past three games, following the Champions League hammering by Sporting earlier this month,
While the Tottenham fans' baiting was also something he has probably not heard before, the 53-year-old is clearly going nowhere.
However, the answers he is seeking to his side's poor form are not easy to come by.
The absence of Rodri is clearly a significant factor. City are a shadow of the team they have been when the midfielder has been available.
With Mateo Kovacic also ruled out, there was no effective screen for a back four that looked vulnerable, even without self-inflicted wounds.
At one point, Ilkay Gundogan looked like he was running in treacle as he chased back fruitlessly in an effort to stop another lightning Tottenham counter attack.
If there was a consolation for the hosts, it was that their visitors were equally flaky. But whereas Tottenham took their chances, City failed to do the same.
Haaland should have put the home side ahead but, for some reason, he tried and failed to control Josko Gvardiol’s cross and ended up having his shot blocked rather than taking aim first time.
Savinho failed to find the Norwegian with a straightforward pass that should have put Haaland clean through. Earlier Haaland had tried to sweep home a low cross from the Brazilian but his effort was turned away by Guglielmo Vicario.
The Tottenham keeper also blocked a second-half effort from substitute Kevin de Bruyne and as the blue seats emptied in significant numbers, Spurs centre-back Radu Dragusin epitomised the tenacity within the visitors ranks as he slid in to deny Haaland a late tap-in.
The huge pre-match embrace between Guardiola and Postecoglou had both men beaming at each other.
But it was only the Australian who was smiling at the final whistle as Tottenham celebrated their biggest away win against City.
Quite how a side can go from being beaten at home by struggling Ipswich to inflicting this kind of shattering blow to the four-time champions on their own patch is open to debate but this game will go down in Spurs folklore.
From appearing to be a danger going forward, City full-back Josko Gvardiol turned into a man to target.
Dejan Kulusevski shrugged him off the ball before crossing superbly for Maddison to apply the first-time finish after 13 minutes.
Seven minutes later, Croatia defender Gvardiol played a blind pass inside from the touchline. It went straight to Maddison, who continued his run after playing a pass to skipper Son Hueng-min, then kept going to apply a deft finish to the return ball.
Dominic Solanke's superb pass that offered Porro the chance to drive home an unstoppable shot to effectively kill the game seven minutes after the restart.
After that, Tottenham played with tenacity to keep City at bay as their supporters' trepidation turned to triumphalism as the final whistle drew near.
Johnson's tap-in completed an historic night for Tottenham.
