Manchester City Football Club is an English Premier League football club based in Manchester. Founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), they became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and Manchester City in 1894 (as seen on the badge). The club has played at the City of Manchester Stadium since 2003, having played at Maine Road from 1923. The club's first major successful period was in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they won the League Championship, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup under the management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison.

After losing the 1981 FA Cup Final, the club went through a period of decline, culminating in relegation to the third tier of English football for the only time in their history in 1998. Having regained Premier League status, the club was purchased in 2008 by Abu Dhabi United Group and became one of the wealthiest in the world. This also marked an era of unprecedented success. In 2011, Manchester City qualified for the UEFA Champions League and won the FA Cup. In 2012, the club won the Premier League, their first league title for 44 years. They won the title again in 2014. Since then, especially under Pep Guardiola's managerial era, Manchester City have become one of the most dominant forces, both in England and Europe. In 2018, they won the league and becoming the only team in the competition history to attain 100 points in a single season. On the next season, they became the first English team to win domestic treble, after winning the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup. They continued on making more achievements, winning three consecutive Premier League titles between 2021 and 2023, reaching the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in 2021 (eventually losing to Chelsea), and finally, in the 2022–23 season, they completed the continental treble, by winning the Champions League (winning 1-0 at home versus Inter) for its first time in history, as well as the Premier League and FA Cup.

Manchester City wear the colours of sky blue and white. They can wear a maroon colour, black and yellow or even peach and sky blue. Their biggest rivals are neighbouring Manchester United, against whom they contest Manchester derby. They also developed rivalries with Arsenal and Liverpool , racing for the Premier League title for many years. After thrashing an 8 game streak with no wins, Pep Guardiola's new signing, Omar Marmoush has scored 4 goals, including a hat-trick versus Newcastle United.

Retired numbers

Since 2003, Manchester City have not issued the squad number 23. It was retired in memory of Marc-Vivien Foé, who was on loan to the club from Lyon at the time of his death on the field of play while playing for Cameroon in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup.
