Lionel Sebastián Scaloni (born 16 May 1978) is an Argentine professional football manager and former player who currently coaches the Argentina national team. A versatile player, he operated as a right-back or right midfielder.
Scaloni started his football career at his hometown club from Province of Santa Fe, Newell's Old Boys. After completing another season at Estudiantes, he was transferred to La Liga side Deportivo La Coruña, where he spent most of his professional football career. With Deportivo, Scaloni won the 1999–2000 La Liga title and the 2001–02 Copa del Rey. He spent eight years with the Galician side, and made 200 appearances with the club. After his stint at Deportivo, he would play for several clubs in England, Spain and Italy, before finally retiring in 2015. Scaloni also has won 7 caps with the national team, and was part of Argentina's 2006 World Cup squad.
In 2016, he joined with Jorge Sampaoli's coaching staff team at Sevilla and continued working with him after a move to Argentina national team. Sampaoli was sacked after Argentina's poor run at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Scaloni, alongside Pablo Aimar, were named as Argentina's caretaker manager, before eventually was made permanent. At first, appointment of Scaloni as manager was met with criticism, with Scaloni was deemed as "unqualified" and "inexperienced". The criticism would continue after Scaloni only managed to lead the side into third place at 2019 Copa América. The AFA continued to put their trust on Scaloni, and extended his contract until 2022. Eventually, Scaloni would answer the public criticism by leading the team into success.
Scaloni took Argentine team into their first trophy in 28 years, by winning the 2021 Copa América, which also gave the captain Lionel Messi, his first international trophy. The team would go on unbeaten run of 36 matches, which includes the victory at 2022 Finalissima match against Italy, handing Argentina another title. The run ended after losing to Saudi Arabia at 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage match. However, this didn't stop the team to continue getting a success. Under Scaloni, Argentina would become the world champions, after winning the final match of the 2022 World Cup against France.
