Philip Desmond "Chic" Bates (born 28 November 1949) is an English former professional footballer and football manager who played as a forward.
Playing career[]
During his playing career, Bates played as a forward and started senior football with local side Stourbridge before moving to Shrewsbury Town, where he would go on to spend two successful spells. After his first spell at The Shrews, Bates joined Swindon Town where he spent two seasons before signing for Bristol Rovers. After his time at Eastville, Bates returned to Gay Meadow as player-manager.
Managerial career[]
His coaching career began as player-manager of Shrewsbury Town, where he had made himself a cult hero after two spells as a player. He left his post as manager in 1987 to become Lou Macari's assistant at Stoke City, and later Scottish side Celtic before returning to the potteries. In 1997, when Macari left Stoke, Bates was appointed first-team manager before The Potters found poor form and looked set for relegation and Bates was sacked. In 1999 and 2004, Bates spent two caretaker manager spells back at Shrewsbury Town.
