Chelsea v Manchester United was a match which took place at Stamford Bridge on Friday 16 May 2025. The match was shown live on live on at 8:15pm BST.

Team News[]

Chelsea[]

Chelsea are missing several forwards, including Nicolas Jackson, who is suspended after his red card in last weekend's defeat by Newcastle, while Jadon Sancho is unable to face his parent club.

Marc Guiu, who has not played since the beginning of February because of a groin injury, is back in training but this game comes too soon, while Christopher Nkunku is also not quite ready to return from an injury sustained a month ago.

Manchester United[]

Manchester United are set to be without Leny Yoro, who limped off with a foot injury during last Sunday's loss to West Ham.

Fellow defender Matthijs de Ligt, who went off in the defeat by Brentford the preceding week, is also a doubt although, like Yoro, he could be fit for next week's Europa League final.

Match facts[]

Head-to-head[]

  • Chelsea have won just one of their last 14 Premier League games against Manchester United (D8, L5), although it was a 4-3 victory in this exact fixture last season.
  • United have won just one of their last 11 Premier League away games against Chelsea (D5, L5), with their most recent victory coming in February 2020.
  • There have been 27 Premier League draws between Chelsea and Manchester United, making it the most drawn fixture in the competition's history.
  • This is just the second Premier League meeting between Chelsea and Manchester United on a Friday, following a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in August 2002.

Chelsea[]

  • Chelsea's run of three straight league wins came to an end last weekend with defeat at Newcastle.
  • The Blues haven't been beaten at Stamford Bridge in the league since Boxing Day, a run of seven wins and two draws.
  • They have conceded just seven Premier League goals at home in 2025, the fewest of any side.
  • Enzo Maresca's side have received 96 yellow cards in this season's Premier League, more than any other side.
  • Chelsea haven't lost their final home league game in any of the last 22 seasons (W15, D7), since a 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa in 2002.
  • Cole Palmer has scored four goals in his three Premier League games against Manchester United for Chelsea.

Manchester United[]

  • Manchester United have lost four of their last five league games.
  • They are winless in their last seven league matches, taking just two points from 21 available. It's their longest run without victory in the Premier League era.
  • Almost a third (13/42) of their league goals in 2024-25 have come in the final 10 minutes of games but they have scored just once in the opening 10 minutes of their league clashes this season.
  • Manchester United have won their final away league game in four of the last five seasons.
  • Only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah has been involved in more goals in all competitions than Bruno Fernandes, who has scored 19 goals and contributed 17 assists. However, under half of these (eight goals and nine assists) have come in the Premier League.

Match Report[]

Chelsea gave their hopes of playing Champions League football next season a huge boost as Marc Cucurella's second-half header saw off Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues needed to win to ensure a top-five finish was in their own hands, but for a large part of Friday's game they were frustrated by the visitors.

However, Cucurella headed in Reece James' excellent cross to secure a win that moves Chelsea up to fourth place in the Premier League.

They sit above Aston Villa on goal difference and a point clear of sixth-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

Although his team have a crucial game against Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday, United boss Ruben Amorim named a strong side for this trip to west London.

It looked like the decision would pay off when Harry Maguire fired home an excellent volley in the first half, but it was ruled out for offside after a review by the video assistant referee (VAR).

Chelsea's James then hit the left post with a swirling effort before the break, and the Blues thought they had a penalty in the second half when Tyrique George went down inside the box as Andre Onana rushed out to push away the ball.

A spot-kick was given initially but then ruled out after a VAR check as replays showed Onana got the ball first.

But the home fans were celebrating soon after when James expertly curled a delivery to the far post from the right and Cucurella rose to guide a header beyond Onana.

Chelsea will travel to Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season knowing they can guarantee Champions League football in 2025-26 with a win.

Defeat for Amorim's United, meanwhile, was their 18th in 37 Premier League games and leaves them 16th in the table.

Chelsea started this season so strongly that they were at one point being talked about as title contenders, but poor form around the turn of the year meant even securing European football for next term was looking uncertain.

But the Blues rediscovered their form just at the right time as three successive wins towards the end of April reignited their bid for a Champions League spot.

A 2-0 loss to fellow top-five hopefuls Newcastle last time out meant it was important they finished their home campaign with a victory to ensure their European destiny remained in their own hands.

It was not easy, as a striker crisis brought on by injuries and suspensions meant academy graduate George led the line for the Blues against United.

For a long while that lack of an experienced forward threatened to leave the Uefa Conference League finalists frustrated as they struggled to trouble Onana.

But ultimately Chelsea looked like the team with the greater desire for the win, and after Cucurella headed in they defended well to make sure of a potentially priceless three points.

The only way Manchester United can salvage anything from a hugely disappointing season is by winning the Europa League, which brings with it the reward of a Champions League place.

With that in mind, it was surprising that Amorim opted to name a strong side for this game.

Amorim said before kick-off that he wanted his players to be feeling in a competitive frame of mind rather than rested before their trip to Bilbao.

While they stayed in this game, United's performance is unlikely to have inspired a great amount of confidence in the ranks before they face fellow Premier League also-rans Spurs in Spain.

They did not manage a permissible shot on target in the first half and only really threatened when Amad Diallo forced a decent save out of Robert Sanchez late on.

United are on their longest winless run in the Premier League, having failed to claim a victory in their last eight league matches.

But their performances in Europe have been better than on the domestic front.

They might muster some heart from that, as well as the news that Tottenham also head into the Europa League final on the back of a loss, having been beaten by Aston Villa.
