Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur was a match which took place at St. James' Park on Friday 16 May 2025. The match was shown live on
at 19:30pm BST.
Match facts[]
Aston Villa[]
- Aston Villa have won three of their last five Premier League games against Tottenham, though they have lost the last two. It’s more victories than they managed in their previous 21 against Spurs (W2 D3 L16).
- Aston Villa have lost 4-0 and 4-1 in their last two Premier League games against Tottenham – only against Everton (1891) and Blackburn (1935-1936) have they conceded 4+ in three consecutive league games against an opponent.
- Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last 20 home games in all competitions (W14 D6), with the Villans last having a longer run between September 1976 and May 1977 (24).
- Since the start of March, only Newcastle (22) have earned more points in the Premier League than Aston Villa (21), with the Villans winning seven of their eight matches in that time (L1).
- Ollie Watkins scored his 75th Premier League goal last time out against Bournemouth, becoming Aston Villa’s highest goalscorer in the competition. He’s looking to score 10 home goals in the same top-flight season for the first time (currently 9), though none of his three goals against Spurs have come at Villa Park.
Tottenham Hotspur[]
- Only against Man City (12) have Tottenham won more Premier League away games than they have against Aston Villa (11), with Spurs winning eight of their last nine at Villa Park (L1).
- Tottenham have won their final away league game in each of the last four campaigns, averaging four goals per game in these matches. However, their last such defeat came the last time their final away game wasn’t their overall final match of the season (0-1 v Bournemouth in 2018-19).
- Tottenham have lost 24 games in all competitions this season, their second highest number of defeats in a single campaign in their history after 1991-92 (25).
- Tottenham have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games (D2 L7), beating bottom side Southampton 3-1 in April. They’ve conceded in each of their last 11 league games, their longest run without a clean sheet since a run of 17 between August and December 2010.
- Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke has applied more pressures (1,198) and made more off the ball runs into the opposition box (290) than any other player in the Premier League this season.
Match Report[]
Aston Villa boosted their hopes of a Champions League spot with a comfortable victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
An eighth win in nine Premier League games lifted Unai Emery's side into fifth place, behind Newcastle and Chelsea on goal difference, but a point above Manchester City.
They claimed the opener just before the hour mark when John McGinn's corner was headed down by Ollie Watkins into the path of Ezri Konsa who slotted in from close range.
Boubacar Kamara made sure of the victory, scoring his first Premier League goal with a low, drilled 73rd-minute finish past Spurs keeper Antonin Kinsky.
McGinn also fired an effort narrowly wide in a commanding Villa performance.
They now have to win their final game of the season at Manchester United and hope other results go their way to seal a top-five finish.
Ange Postecoglou's injury-hit Spurs side had little to offer in response and remain fourth from bottom as they turn their attention to the Europa League final against Ruben Amorim's United on Wednesday, 21 May.
The hosts dominated the first half but couldn't find a way past an impressive Kinsky in the Tottenham goal.
Morgan Rodgers' deft header was pushed past the post along with a Watkins cross, while Marco Asensio's curling strike drifted narrowly wide.
The home fans were audibly frustrated, but they were soon joyous when Konsa turned home and Kamara's thumping low drive sealed a huge three points.
A third season of European football will be coming to Villa Park, but their competition fate will be decided on the final day.
Whatever the outcome, it has been another season to be proud of under Emery's leadership as he oversaw a 54th victory in his 100th league game as Villa boss.
With several key players missing through injury or rested, and their focus on a season-defining Europa League final on Wednesday (20:00 BST), Spurs struggled to create opportunities as they suffered their 21st defeat of a disappointing league campaign.
They have failed to win any of their last six Premier League games and 25 defeats is now their joint-highest in all competitions since the 1991-92 season.
A bright spark for Spurs was the return of captain Son Heung-Min after being sidelined for the last month with a foot injury.
He had one clear run at goal, but fluffed his shot, and was unable to bend another effort into the top corner after latching on to Wilson Odobert's pass.
French winger Odobert's clever improvised backheel almost caught Emiliano Martinez off guard, but the Argentine keeper saw it just in time to make a vital save.
In another injury worry for Spurs boss Postecoglou, midfielder Pape Sarr looked to be wincing as he was withdrawn in the second half.
