Josh Windass scored Sheffield Wednesday’s first penalty for more than 18 months to set them on their way to victory at troubled Hull City.
Borja Sainz's hat-trick saw Norwich City end their seven-game winless run and inflict a record loss on Plymouth Argyle boss Wayne Rooney as they won 6-1 at Carrow Road.
Sheffield United went to the top of the Championship after another impressive home display saw them brush aside Oxford United 3-0 at Bramall Lane.
Stoke City and Preston North End failed to break the deadlock in a goalless stalemate that ended with visiting goalkeeper Freddie Woodman being sent off in stoppage time.
Watford climbed into the Championship's play-off positions with a narrow victory over Bristol City at Vicarage Road.
Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion played out a disappointing goalless draw which did few favours for either side's early season ambitions.
Queen's Park Rangers moved off the bottom of the Championship with a 2-0 win away at Cardiff City.
Leeds United moved to the top of the Championship after completing an emphatic win over Luton Town at Elland Road.
Blackburn Rovers put the brakes on free-scoring Middlesbrough, winning a hard-fought Championship contest with a late goal from defender Dom Hyam.
Portsmouth's Championship game against Millwall was called off because of a power failure at Fratton Park.
Swansea City clung on for victory over Derby County after early goals from Zan Vipotnik and Ronald despite a spirited Rams fightback at Pride Park.
