The 2022 Major League Soccer season was the 27th season of Major League Soccer (MLS), the top professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. The 2022 season will include the addition of Charlotte FC as an expansion club, which takes the league to 28 teams.

The regular season began on February 26 and conclude on October 9. The MLS Cup Final is scheduled to occur on November 5, sixteen days prior to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

New York City FC will enter the season as defending champions, having defeated the Portland Timbers in MLS Cup 2021. The New England Revolution will enter the season as the reigning Supporters' Shield winners.

Regular season[]

Format[]

Each team will play 34 matches, including 17 home games and 17 away games. Due to the difference in the number of teams in each conference, each conference has its own schedule construction format:

  • All 14 Eastern Conference teams will play six regional Eastern Conference opponents three times and the remaining seven Eastern Conference opponents twice. Each of them will also play two cross conference games against different opponents.
  • 11 out of the 13 Western Conference teams will play eight regional Western Conference opponents three times and the remaining four Western Conference opponents twice. Each of them will also play two cross conference games against different opponents.
  • The remaining 2 teams from Western Conference will play seven Western Conference opponents three times and the remaining five Western Conference opponents twice. Each of them will also play three cross conference games against different opponents.

Tiebreakers[]

The tie-breaker will be used in this order:

  1. Points
  2. Total wins
  3. Total goal differential
  4. Total goals scored
  5. Fewer disciplinary points
  6. Away goal differential
  7. Away goals scored
  8. Home goals differential
  9. Home goals scored
  10. Coin toss (2 clubs tied) or drawing of lots (≥3 clubs tied)

Disciplinary points are decided as follows:

  1. Foul (1 point)
  2. Technical area warning (2 points)
  3. Yellow card (3 points)
  4. Second yellow card (7 points)
  5. Straight red card (7 points)
  6. Coach dismissal (7 points)
  7. Any supplemental discipline (8 points)
