The 2021–22 National League season, known as the Vanarama National League for sponsorship reasons, was the 7th season under English football's new title of National League, 15th season consisting of three divisions and the 43rd season overall.
The league planned in 2019 to increase the number of teams in its North and South divisions to 24 each, an expansion that was to occur this season. It meant only two from the North and one from the South were to be relegated to the premier divisions of the Northern Premier League, Southern League Central or South, or Isthmian League at the end of 2020–21. However, due to the curtailment of the preceding season for North and South, promotion and relegation were suspended. For that reason, expansion plans were reportedly delayed to 2023–24.
