The 2020–21 season is Barnsley Football Club 'sEnglish football , following promotion from League One in 2018-19 and a last-gasp relegation escape act in the previous Championship season .
In addition to their league schedule, Barnsley will participate in the FA Cup this season; they will enter the third round in January and face Tranmere Rovers at home. The club also participated in the EFL Cup in September, being eliminated in the third round by Chelsea .
On 6 October, Barnsley announced head coach Gerhard Struber had left the club to take the vacant position at Major League Soccer outfit New York Red Bulls . A little over two weeks later, Valérien Ismaël was announced as his successor.
