The 2019–20 La Liga season, also known as La Liga Santander for sponsorship reasons, was the 89th since its establishment.
Barcelona were the two-time defending champions after winning La Liga last season for the 26th time. Osasuna, Granada and Mallorca join as the promoted clubs from the 2018–19 Segunda División. They replaced Rayo Vallecano, Huesca and Girona who were relegated to the 2019–20 Segunda División.
On 12 March 2020, the league was suspended for at least two weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic in Spain, after a Real Madrid basketball player tested positive for the virus, which resulted in Real Madrid's players being put in quarantine. The league was suspended indefinitely on 23 March. The season recommenced on 11 June, with matches being played every day until 13 July, while all games in the penultimate round was played on 16 July and last round on 19 July.
On 16 July, Real Madrid were crowned league winners for a record 34th time with one match remaining, after defeating Villarreal 2–1 (in addition to Barcelona's 2–1 loss to Osasuna).
