The 2016–17 season was Rotherham United's 92nd season in their existence and the third consecutive season in The Championship.
Along with competing in the Championship, the club also participated in the FA Cup, in which they enter in the third round, and EFL Cup.
The season also saw The Millers suffer relegation back to League One after finishing in 24th, ending a 3-year stay in the second tier.
