The 2016–17 season will be Burnley's 135th competitive season and their first season back in the Premier League, just one season after their relegation in 2014–15. Along with the Championship, the club will also compete in the FA Cup and Football League Cup. The season covers the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017.

On 20 May 2016, Burnley announced their first pre-season friendly for the 2016–17 season. It was confirmed that they will face Bolton Wanderers on 26 July at the Macron Stadium.

b: Manchester United qualified for the Champions League group stage by winning the 2016–17 UEFA Europa League. They also qualified for the Europa League group stage based on their league position, but that spot was vacated without replacement per UEFA regulations, and their spot in the Europa League third qualifying round as winners of the 2016–17 EFL Cup was passed down the league.
